ShipStation vs Shippo vs ShipBob vs Printful – which should I use?
Recrevio supports several integrations for shipping and fulfillment, but they solve different parts of the process.
The right option depends mainly on one question:
Who is actually storing, preparing, and shipping the product after a customer places an order?
- ShipStation and Shippo are primarily shipping tools for businesses that handle their own inventory and fulfillment.
- ShipBob is a third-party logistics provider (3PL) that can store your inventory and fulfill orders for you.
- Printful is a print-on-demand provider that produces the product after it is ordered and then ships it to the customer.
This article explains the differences and helps you choose the integration that best fits your business.
Quick comparison
| Integration | Best for | Inventory | Picking & packing | Shipping |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ShipStation | Businesses fulfilling their own orders and wanting a more complete shipping workflow | You | You | Managed through ShipStation |
| Shippo | Businesses fulfilling their own orders and wanting flexible carrier rates and labels | You | You | Managed through Shippo |
| ShipBob | Businesses that want to outsource warehousing and fulfillment | ShipBob | ShipBob | ShipBob |
| Printful | Businesses selling print-on-demand products without holding inventory | Produced on demand | Printful | Printful |
💡 Tip
If you are unsure, start by identifying where the physical product is before the customer orders it. That usually makes the right category much clearer.
The main difference: shipping vs fulfillment
Shipping and fulfillment are related, but they are not the same thing.
Shipping
Shipping is the part where a packed order is handed over to a carrier and delivered to the customer.
This includes things such as:
- Comparing carrier rates
- Selecting delivery services
- Creating shipping labels
- Calculating shipping costs
- Managing shipments and tracking
ShipStation and Shippo primarily help with this part of the process.
Fulfillment
Fulfillment includes everything that happens between receiving an order and handing the package to the carrier.
This can include:
- Storing inventory
- Receiving the order
- Picking the products
- Packing the order
- Creating the shipment
- Handing it to the carrier
ShipBob can handle this process using inventory you have supplied to ShipBob.
Printful goes one step further for print-on-demand products by also producing the product after the order is placed.
ShipStation
Choose ShipStation when you store and fulfill your own products but want a dedicated system for managing the shipping process.
A typical workflow looks like this:
- A customer places an order in your Recrevio store
- The order is sent to ShipStation
- You prepare and pack the product
- You use ShipStation to manage the shipment and carrier
- You create the shipping label and send the order
ShipStation is especially useful if shipping is becoming an important operational part of your business and you want a centralized workflow for managing orders, carriers, labels, and shipments.
ShipStation is a good fit if:
- You hold your own inventory
- You pack orders yourself or through your own warehouse
- You ship a regular volume of physical products
- You want to work with multiple carriers
- You want shipping rates available during checkout
- You want a dedicated shipping-management workflow
You are still responsible for the physical fulfillment of the order.
💡 Example
You sell candles from your own stock. When an order arrives, you pick and pack the candles yourself, then use ShipStation to select the shipping service, create the label, and manage the shipment.
Shippo
Choose Shippo when you fulfill your own products but primarily want a flexible way to work with shipping carriers, compare rates, and create labels.
The overall workflow is similar to ShipStation:
- A customer places an order
- Shipping options and rates can be provided through Shippo
- You pick and pack the product
- You use Shippo to choose the shipping service and create the label
- The package is sent through the selected carrier
Shippo is often a good fit when you want a relatively straightforward carrier and shipping-rate solution without outsourcing the fulfillment itself.
Shippo is a good fit if:
- You hold your own inventory
- You fulfill and pack orders yourself
- You want access to multiple carriers
- Comparing shipping rates is important
- You want calculated shipping options at checkout
- You need shipping labels and carrier tools
Just like with ShipStation, you remain responsible for storing, picking, and packing the products.
💡 Example
You sell physical workbooks and keep them in your office. You package each order yourself but use Shippo to compare delivery options and buy the appropriate shipping label.
ShipStation vs Shippo
ShipStation and Shippo overlap considerably because both are designed for merchants who continue to handle their own fulfillment.
The main distinction is therefore less about who fulfills the order and more about the shipping workflow you prefer.
ShipStation
A good choice when you want shipping and order management to become a more central operational system for your business.
Shippo
A good choice when your main need is flexible access to carrier rates and shipping labels with a relatively lightweight shipping workflow.
💡 Tip
If you are choosing specifically between ShipStation and Shippo, think about the shipping workflow you want to use outside Recrevio as well. Both can solve the carrier-and-label part of fulfillment, so the best choice will often depend on which service, carriers, pricing, and workflow better fit your business.
ShipBob
Choose ShipBob when you do not want to store, pick, and pack every order yourself.
ShipBob is a third-party logistics provider (3PL).
You send your existing inventory to ShipBob's fulfillment network. When a customer places an order, the order can be sent to ShipBob for fulfillment.
A typical workflow looks like this:
- You send inventory to ShipBob
- ShipBob stores the products
- A customer orders from your Recrevio store
- The order is sent to ShipBob
- ShipBob picks and packs the products
- ShipBob ships the order to the customer
ShipBob is a good fit if:
- You sell physical products
- You already have manufactured inventory
- You no longer want to store products yourself
- Packing and shipping orders takes too much time
- You want to outsource fulfillment
- Your order volume is growing
- You want a fulfillment operation that can scale beyond your own office or warehouse
💡 Example
You have manufactured 2,000 units of a physical journal. Instead of storing the journals and packing every order yourself, you send the stock to ShipBob. ShipBob stores the journals and fulfills new orders as they arrive.
Printful
Choose Printful when you want to sell products that are produced on demand after the customer places an order.
Printful is fundamentally different from the other three options because you generally do not need to purchase and store finished inventory in advance.
A typical workflow looks like this:
- You create a product using a Printful-supported product and your design
- You sell the product through your store
- A customer places an order
- The order is sent to Printful
- Printful produces or prints the product
- Printful packs it
- Printful ships it directly to the customer
Printful is a good fit if:
- You sell print-on-demand products
- You do not want to hold inventory
- You want products created only after they are purchased
- You want production and fulfillment handled for you
- You sell products such as branded apparel, prints, or other customizable merchandise supported by Printful
💡 Example
You sell a branded T-shirt. You do not keep 100 shirts in different sizes at home. When someone orders a Large, Printful produces the shirt, packs it, and sends it directly to the customer.
ShipBob vs Printful
Both ShipBob and Printful can remove the need for you to personally pack and ship every order, but they solve very different problems.
ShipBob
You already have the finished products.
You manufacture or source the inventory and send it to ShipBob, which stores and fulfills it.
Printful
The finished product generally does not exist yet.
Printful creates the product after the customer orders it, then fulfills and ships it.
A simple way to think about it is:
Existing inventory → ShipBob
Made on demand → Printful
Which one should I choose?
Use this quick decision guide:
I store and pack my own products
Choose ShipStation or Shippo.
They help you manage the shipping side of fulfillment while you remain responsible for the physical products.
I have my own products, but I want someone else to store and ship them
Choose ShipBob.
ShipBob acts as your outsourced warehouse and fulfillment operation.
I don't want to manufacture or stock the product before it sells
Choose Printful if the products you want to sell are available through its print-on-demand model.
Printful produces and fulfills each item after an order is placed.
Example scenarios
I sell handmade products from my studio
You already hold the products and want to pack them yourself → ShipStation or Shippo
I run a growing ecommerce brand and currently have thousands of products in my garage
You own the inventory but want to outsource storage, picking, packing, and shipping → ShipBob
I want to sell T-shirts with my designs but don't want to buy inventory upfront
The products should only be produced when someone buys them → Printful
I already use my own warehouse team but need better carrier and label management
You do not need outsourced fulfillment → ShipStation or Shippo
I manufacture my own physical product in bulk but don't want to operate a warehouse
You already have finished inventory → ShipBob
Consider your customer experience too
The fulfillment model affects more than your internal workflow.
Also consider:
- Available delivery methods
- Shipping costs
- Delivery speed
- Countries you sell to
- Returns
- Tracking
- Packaging
- Whether products need to be manufactured first
- How much control you want over packing and fulfillment
The cheapest or simplest integration is not necessarily the best choice if it creates a worse delivery experience for your customers.
